Truly, the Royal Randwick has a lot to boast about its tracks. It has a total of eight tracks. The Course Proper, which is the largest in New South Wales the Kensington Track, which is the second largest and where racing, training, and trials are held the Dirt Track the Steeple Track the B Grass the Sand Track the Jump-Out Track for trainings and lastly, the Cinders Track, which is used for warm-up.  Here is detailed information of each track.

  • Course Proper. The Randwick Races Course Proper Track holds a circumference of approximately 2,224 meter highlighting sweeping bends. Its straight is 410 meters long featuring a slight uphill slope.
  • Kensington Track. This track has a circumference of 2,100 meters and has a straight of 401 meters. Its track direction is clockwise.
  • Training Tracks. The B Grass measures 1501m x 20m, the Steeple Track Grass is 1800m x 19m the Dirt Track is 1942m x 13m the Sand Track 1440m x 6.5m, and the Inside Track which is metal and ashes measures 1081m x 11m.

Though Randwick Races has four turns and is large enough to accommodate numbers of runners, the course favors more the pace runners. This is true during winter months when rain affects most the ground. Plus, it holds a Bullring pool and Equine pool and can even be a home of more than 650 horses.

Major Races At Randwick Racecourse

Events held and being held in Randwick Races are countless but usually major, events are held during its autumn and spring carnival. Take note, these events are not just simple horse racing events but rather Australias premier ones. To name the most prestigious race in the history of Ranwick is the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap. This race is a $2M-worth 1,600m race held during the Randwick Autumn Carnival. Other major events during the Autumn Carnival are AJC Australian Derby which is a 3-year-old set weight 2,400m race and has a price money of $1,500,000 AJC Australian Oaks also a 2,400m race for 3-year-old female and has a prize amounting to $550,000 and the 3,200m open handicap race known as the Sydney Cup that has a prize money of $500,000.

The major events held during late September and early October (Spring Carnival) happens only in a two-day carnival hosting. During the first day, the Group 1 weight-for-age race George Main Stakes is held for $350,000 and the open handicap race known as Epsom Handicap happens on the second day with a pot money of $500,000. Held also on the second day are the three Group 1 races which are the Metropolitan, an open handicap $400,000 race Flight Stakes, also a $400,000 but 3-year-old female set weight race, and the Spring Champion Stakes for 3-year-old set weights in a 2,000m race also with prize money of $400,000.

About The Randwick Race Club

The racecourse has a very rich history. Horse racing at Randwick started as early as 1883. As the years went by, the track started to deteriorate, which made people call it as the Sandy Course. However, in 1860, after the site was redeveloped, Randwick Races regained its popularity. Then Queen Elizabeth Stand II was aroused in 1969, now catering about 40,000.

Since 2011, the club is a part of the Australian Turf Club from being solely administrated by Australian Jockey Club. The merging of the two has opened up lots of good benefits to the club in general and stuffed it with a busier schedule. Aside from racing, the club also serves as home to numbers of events not related to racing. Sometimes, the venue is used for concerts, papal masses, conventions, and the like.

Since the club is located five kilometers in the eastern Suburbs of Sydney, getting here is easy. There are two ways to reach the Royal Randwick Races and witness the prestigious events and fascinating facilities inside. One mode is through a car via Cahill Elxpressway and yes, there is a spacious parking space in this racecourse. The other way is through train. The nearest train station to the venue is the Central Station. From the central station, you can take buses departing and returning to the station every 15 minutes especially during race days.
